Nine

[2001-2005]

Nine is what I called the system that I made to start doing live audiovisual performances. My "toilet-seat" iBook had one of the first graphics cards that actually made OpenGL run significantly faster than software. I realized that I could do both synthesized sound and realtime graphics on it, within reason. I sketched out a plan for the audio-visual synth I wanted to make, then looked at a few options for implementing it and chose the Max/MSP environment. The resulting externals were pretty cool and led to my working on the OpenGL implementation for Jitter, then in development.

The Tactex MTC Express was my controller for the system. A true multi-touch force-sensing surface, the MTC had really amazing potential for live performance. It's unfortunately not made anymore, and the existing ones are aging, but I'm working on options.

Mostly my focus was on playing live. Not very much got documented. One video I recorded, "lunarlanderlegs," made it into a screening at Sonar 2002.
